Our intention on our second day at Glacier was to tackle a longer day hike that our old buddy Fred had told us about. Fred was the retired park ranger we met in Teton who, among other tips, suggested we try this one particular hike that would involve holding on to a cable across a mountain ridge while potentially skirting out of the way of passing goats. But we overslept – Derek and I like to blame Murphy when this happens because the guy loves to snooze- and figured it was a bit late to get started on a 6 hour hike, and decided we’d use the day instead to drive the infamous Going to the Sun Road, check out the rest of the sights, and head up to the northern part of the park, Many Glacier. In addition to being what they called “the heart of Glacier,” Many Glacier also had something Derek and I both really needed…a shower. It had been 6 days since our last one, so it probably worked out for the best that we slept in a bit that morning and skipped out on the hike. After instant coffee and oatmeal (breakfast of champions/the only breakfast option we really have), we headed out on a 30+ mile ride to Many Glacier, with stops along the way to take it all in. It’s hard to describe Glacier, and even harder to stop taking pictures of it while you’re there.

Before getting to Many Glacier, we stopped at a local place for lunch and bloody mary’s, just outside the town of Babb on the outskirts of the park. The bison burger, pulled pork and bloodies were delish.
And then onto Many Glacier and a short drive, with more beautiful views, along the Swiftcurrent River. Just when we thought it couldn’t get better…![]()

After the much needed showers, we rounded out the afternoon at a Mexican cantina on the side of the road just before the entrance back into Glacier. So instead of the 6 hour hike, we were gluttons and went the other way with the day. You know what they say…when in Montana, drink Mexican beer.
