Cloudland Canyon, Georgia

After back to back city visits, we were in serious need of two things: detoxing and the outdoors. We’ve also reached the point in our road trip that we have to face the fact that unless we pull a sharp left turn and head back west, we’re driving north to Boston. And as much as we’d love to keep living on the road for longer, much longer, it’ll very soon be too cold to sleep in the Shasta in any of the parts of the country we’d actually want to spend our time. That, and we have a few nieces and nephews back home that I’ve been missing pretty badly. So back home to Massachusetts we go. But first, we needed our fix of waking up in the woods a few more times.

From Louisiana, this meant a full day of driving through Mississippi and Alabama, and we settled in Georgia for a night to camp and hike in Cloudland Canyon State Park, which apparently is one of the most popular spots to camp in the state and turned out to be a beautiful place to stop. I guess I didn’t realize that the leaves would all still be in prime fall foliage in this part of the country at this time of year, or that there were even canyons, in north Georgia.

From Georgia, we crossed over the Tennessee state line and made a quick stop to stretch our legs, had brunch at the Hair of the Dog Pub in Chattanooga and talked to a handful of very friendly locals. Murph made fast friends with another boxer pup named Shotzee so we stopped to talk to her owners for a bit. Then it was back in the truck and we were headed for the Smokies.
