The Goonies (Astoria, OR)

We’re going to the Goondocks… So this has been a childhood… dream? Not really a dream, I just always thought it would be super cool to see the places from the Goonies… hold on to your seats, this is going to be an emotional rollercoaster of a post. (not really)

thumb_IMG_2216_1024.jpgTo get to Astoria, you have to drive over a super long bridge (zero facts about the bridge, but it’s a long one)… So the anticipation just built for me… our first planned stop was just down by the river walk so that we could Murphy a little exercise before really becoming immersed in the Goondocks. As is so turns out, we ended up parking at the Oregon Film Museum, which just happens to be the old County Jail, the same jail that the Fratelli’s break Jake out of in the opening credits of the Goonies. IT’S HAPPENING…

So yeah, we went in. It was pretty cool, the Fratelli’s Jeep, or as Chunk called it, the ORV with bullet holes the size of matzah balls, was parked right in front… almost as if the chase was about to start at any minute. Inside the jail… was, well, cells… the very cell that Jake pretended to hang himself in, support pipe and sign to boot.

I was like a kid at this point. In one cell, which was locked, was Data’s entire outfit from the movie… bully blinders, pinchers of power, boxing glove…. it was all there. The rest of the museum tried to spread the wealth to the other films that had been shot in Oregon (as if anyone cared about them), but other great films like, Kindergarten Cop (Astoria Elementary)… I’m a cop you Idiot!, Free Willy, Point Break, Twilight, The Ring 2… just to name a few…

Then it was time for some grub… which, if you’ve been reading our blog… you know, means… Brewery time… We headed down toward the water and found Wet Dog Cafe and Astoria Brewing (same place). It’s not that Tara or I are die hard brewery fans, but we’ve found that two things are usually certain, breweries have outside seating, and allow dogs… almost always. So that’s where we end up. And we’re not complaining. So, Astoria Brewing has a “Copper Bones” Ale, which I had to have… Copper Bones was the necklace that Mikey took off of Chester Copperpot (I’m writing to a Goonies crowd right? Do I need to explain these things?… I’ll continue to anyways…) Anyways… Copper Bones… must try. It had a caramel popcorn finish which was weird but great. TRIVIA: Who’s baseball card did Mikey find in Copperpots wallet?

Brewery number…?

Oh and across the street was the Inferno Lounge which, unfortunately, wasn’t open. (The Inferno was the name of One Eye’d Willy’s ship…)

After food, we were on to probably the most frustrating and disappointing part of the trip. The Goonies house (Mikey’s house) has new owners who by all accounts… are assholes. They have gone to the extent of placing large tarps up covering the front of the house so that no pictures can be taken. There are two signs at the end of their street warning people that police will be called if people are walking or driving up their street. I don’t get it… They bought the Goonies house…what did they think it was going to be like? Apparently the 30th anniversary of the Goonies sent them over the edge with 1200-1500 visitors a day, they lost their minds. So, I didn’t end up going up the street, mostly because it’s a dead end, not something you can just drive by. We took a couple from the street to show the front of the house… but really, being there was enough… I went to Astoria and saw the Goonies house, and the jail, and the building where Mikey’s goofball dad waves and says “Hi Mikey” as be fumbles with the flag… I never thought I’d actually go there.

So, while we were in Astoria is started to rain and we realized that it wouldn’t be a campfire night (plus we had no idea where we were sleeping yet) so we stopped at a movie rental place. Yeah, not Redox, not Netflix… a movie rental place. It wasn’t even one of the long forgotten chain rental places, it was Movie Horizons. We wanted to rent Goonies. Obviously after being there… we had to watch the movie… and for $12 we ended up buying Goonies and the first Twilight movie (I let it slide on the premise that it’s filmed in Oregon as well as Washington)… So there… in Astoria, I bought a copy of the Goonies DVD.

Now for Ramen and movie night. Tomorrow, on to Seaside, Cannon Beach (where the beach truck race scene in the opening credits of Goonies was filmed) and Haystack Rock, then Ecola state park (also where the Goonies was filmed… It never ends here… )

Oh, and before I sign off on this… the store at the country jail is missing out.. the two items every Goonies store worth it’s salt should sell, the map, and the doubloon that lines up the rocks the lighthouse and the restaurant. But no, they had 5 Goonies shirts… all black, with white Goonies written on it… they were pretty much the same though. Just thought they were missing out and selling the wrong stuff… it’s like, If you have a fireworks stand… you don’t just sell snakes and sparklers because those are what you like…
